Ever since elections were being announced, one question that has been bothering me is who I should vote for: the party or the face? Really, finding an answer to this question was a tough fight. While my mind kept telling me that go with the party my heart insisted go with the face. And ultimately my heart overpowered my brain—I went with the face and decided to vote for someone, whose parties’ ideologies I don’t readily believe in but that person however looked promising.
I have had long conversation about the same with my sister, who was against my thoughts of voting for the face. She said, “Don’t you know the man you opt for is not going to govern your locality. By selecting a man whose party’s ideology you don’t believe in you would be giving a chance to the party, you don't really wanna come to power? Do you want that?” No, that is not what I want, but I also can’t vote for someone just because he belongs to a party, he must have certain qualities of his own right?
Qualifications and a clean background is a must—maybe I am asking for too much from an Indian politician. Jokes apart. Isn't it something that i can expect from any bureaucrat or the politician for that matter who we chose to make a difference to the locality we live in, the country we belong to, and to the lives of common people especially the downtrodden class who don't even get proper food and water, forget about the basic luxuries of life. Isn't this what democracy is all about? Isn't this why we chose a representative of our own, to take care of the basic needs of the society, the common man, and the nation? This is what I expect from all of them, the politicians, and that is the only reason why I decided to vote. Though I don't really believe in any political party, though I personally would like to have a bi-party system in my (our) country, though I am against the ideologies and tactics that the politicians use during the election season, but I made up my mind that I will vote and I really did, on 7th May 2009.
After struggling a lot with my thoughts, and having a tough fight between my brain and heart I went to the pooling booth full of enthusiasm. But when I reached there, much to my dismay I found that the candidates are not the ones about whom I did read in the newspaper that very morning. I had no clue who they are. But since I went there, I had to vote, and ironically not intentionally I ended up voting for the party. Had no other option left. Though later my sis told me that the chap I have voted for is an educated man, some lawyer. Felt a bit relieved, but the guilt is very much there. Only if I would have had enough knowledge about the contesting candidate from my locality, I would have voted for the right man. Then I would have voted as an intelligent and responsible citizen and not as someone who just went to the booth to have the latest fashion symbol on his finger, the voting signature. I am no fashionista, or someone who follows trends, but this time I ended up being one. Unintentionally though. :(
Note: I know I am a bit late with this writeup, now toh even results are out. Congress has won and this one is biggest victories in the past 18 years. But I am just wondering, will our political system ever get a revamp—aren’t you fed up of all the ongoing political razmataaz and the usual Congress vs BJP fights. Left, DMK, AIADMK, JD and BJD playing their usual cards to come to the power. Will Indian political scenario ever change?
